Closer than He Appears**

**That elephant, I mean.

I’ll write a full trip recap with real photos when I get home but I just wanted to say that one week in and this trip has been pretty amazing. The universe has kindly graced us with sunshine and abundance, in terms of the animals we could see. In addition to elephants I have seen water buffalo, zebras, giraffes, lions, rhinos, impalas, monkeys, gnus, antelope, crocodiles and the head of a submerged hippo.

I have crossed off TWO items on the Manifeisty Life List: 1) Photograph the Big Five on safari in Africa (in truth, it is only four of five as we saw no leopards but it is my list and I am calling it fulfilled). 2) I have added South Africa to the list of top wine producing countries where I have drank the local wine (in fact, I’ve been sampling a new variety each night thanks to a wine enthusiast travel companion!).

Today we are in the Drakensberg mountains, which are truly amazing. We have spent a LOT of time in the tour truck so far so today I took the chance to get some exercise and fresh air. I headed off for a nearly four-hour solo hike up the hill (I think I got about 500 meters of altitude!). It was awesome!

Tomorrow it’s back in the truck headed to a new destination!
